SUMMARY:Addressing Summer Hunger through Summer EBT
DESCRIPTION:When schools close for the summer\, nearly 30 million children that rely daily on USDA’s school breakfast and lunch programs lose access to these nutritious meals. Thanks to bipartisan action by Congress\, States have two powerful new tools to fight summer hunger. The 2023 Omnibus\, signed into law late last year\, established a permanent Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (Summer EBT) program\, which will provide benefit dollars to eligible low-income families with children to purchase groceries during the summer months. Additionally\, the law included a provision permitting non-congregate feeding options for summer meal programs in certain rural areas. \nWith both programs set to be fully operational in 2024\, there are several steps states can take now to prepare for effective implementation. Please join The Education Trust and the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) on Wednesday\, September 6\, from 12-1 pm ET\, for a briefing with Food and Nutrition Service staff at the U.S. Department of Agriculture on implementation and next steps. Wednesday’s conversation with Agency staff is an opportunity to learn more about the steps FNS has taken to-date to prepare for successful implementation\, and what actions partners can take to support. \nRegister

SUMMARY:TIRRC Transformative Conversations: How to effectively engage with others on issues of immigration
DESCRIPTION:This training will seek to equip community leaders to better engage with others on topics of immigration. \nTransformative Conversations will present on TIRRC’s findings from a cutting edge public opinion and messaging study conducted in 2018\, that utilized deep canvassing to identify what moves conflicted individuals towards favorable and supportive views of immigration.  In collaboration with UCLA and Berkley\, we surveyed voters to measure the effects deep canvassing has on both people’s opinion on immigration policy and implicit bias.  The results showed overwhelmingly that deep canvassing not only moves voters at their door towards more supportive views of immigrants\, but also that this movement is lasting. \nEven if you’re not canvassing door to door\, you can learn to be a deep canvasser in your own life and everyday interactions.  Join us to learn how to better navigate difficult conversations with others in a more productive and effective manner. \nThere are two upcoming opportunities to join: December 7 @ 6 PM CST and December 8 @ 12 PM CST. \nIf you are unable to attend this date\, but are interested in future trainings\, please reach out to deepcanvassing@tnimmigrant.org directly. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Understanding Tennessee’s Education Budget with The Sycamore Institute
DESCRIPTION:In early February\, Governor Lee will deliver his annual State of the State address and unveil his priorities for the year and his recommendations for the 2024 – 2025 budget. Tennessee’s budget is one of the most significant pieces of public policy our governor and the Tennessee General Assembly tackle each year. Yet understanding what’s in it\, why it matters\, and how it works can be a challenge. Join The Education Trust – Tennessee to reflect on Governor Lee’s budget and the important education implications it has for our students and schools communities. \nThis session will be led by policy expert Mandy Spears\, Deputy Director of The Sycamore Institute\, an independent nonpartisan Public Policy Research Center that works to help Tennesseans understand the complex issues impacting our state by providing accessible\, reliable data and research. Each year\, the Sycamore Institute conducts a thorough analysis of Tennessee’s budget\, seeking to support stakeholders to understand where money comes from\, where it goes\, and what factors influence its flow through the state. Advocates will leave this session with resources and a better understanding of Tennessee’s budget content\, how the budget process works\, and how the budget will impact our education system this upcoming year. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Stand Against Injustice - Is DEI Dead?
DESCRIPTION:After a video of George Floyd’s murder by a police officer in Summer 2020 went viral\, spontaneous protests spread across the globe. The protests brought attention to the urgent need to address systemic racism. Organizations across industries announced significant investments in diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) staff and anti-racism efforts. Nearly four years later\, a wave of local legislation and political activism has targeted Civil Rights legislation\, equity policies like affirmative action\, and DEI industry leaders. \nData shows that the DEI industry has been battered by mass layoffs and shuttered programs\, suggesting that backlash has caused organizations’ commitment to DEI efforts to waver. Join YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee on February 28th 2023 as we gather community and industry leaders together to discuss the current state of anti-racism in America and whether DEI can survive. \nRegister
